How does the 4LEFT golf handicap calculator work?
Take a photo of your completed scorecard after your round.
4LEFT reads the card, extracts the players and scores, and presents them for you to check.
If the scorecard contains several players, simply select which scores are yours.
Do that for three rounds and 4LEFT calculates your first 4LEFT Handicap using WHS-style methodology.
After that, keep photographing your cards and your scoring history develops automatically.
The process is:
- Play your round normally.
- Photograph the scorecard with your phone.
- Select your scores if the card contains multiple players.
- Check that 4LEFT has read the card correctly.
- Save the round.
- Repeat for three cards.
- Get your first 4LEFT Handicap.
Capture more than just your score
If you want more analysis from your round, add a little more information to the scorecard before you photograph it.
Write down:
- the number of putts on each hole
- whether you hit or missed the fairway
4LEFT can capture that information along with your scores.
From your score and putts, 4LEFT can also calculate greens in regulation, so you do not need to mark GIR separately.
You still use a normal paper scorecard. You are simply giving 4LEFT more information to analyse after the round.
What do I need to calculate my handicap?
You need three completed golf scorecards.
They do not need to contain only your scores. A normal card with several players is fine.
For each round, 4LEFT needs your scores together with the course and tees you played.
The app uses course information such as Course Rating and Slope Rating where available to calculate your handicap.
You do not need to work out Score Differentials yourself.
Take the photo. Pick your scores. Check the card. Save it.
Can the scorecard contain several players?
Yes.
A scorecard can contain scores for multiple golfers.
4LEFT reads the players and scores from the card and lets you select which scores belong to you before the round is saved.
You do not need a separate scorecard containing only your own score.
That means you can use the same paper card you normally use when playing with friends, in a society or in a competition.
Do I need to enter every hole manually?
Usually, no.
The simplest way to add a round is to photograph your paper scorecard with your phone.
4LEFT reads the card and extracts the scores for you.
If several players are on the card, you select your scores.
You then confirm that the card has been read correctly before saving the round.
Manual entry remains available when you need it, but it does not have to be your normal workflow.
Can I calculate a handicap from one scorecard?
Not yet.
Your first card starts your 4LEFT scoring history.
Your first 4LEFT Handicap is calculated once your third card has been entered.
That means you do not need 20 rounds before you can start seeing a handicap.
If you already have three completed scorecards, you can photograph them and build your initial record straight away.
Is the 4LEFT handicap calculator free?
You can start using 4LEFT and add your scorecards without paying for an official handicap service.
Photograph three cards and 4LEFT calculates your first handicap.
From there, keep adding the rounds you play and follow how your number changes.
4LEFT includes your first 3 scorecards free — enough to reach your first handicap. After that, adding further cards is part of 4LEFT Premium (£48/year); the rounds, handicap and analysis you have already built stay yours either way.
Is a 4LEFT Handicap an official WHS Handicap Index?
No.
A 4LEFT Handicap is not an official WHS Handicap Index and 4LEFT is not an authorised WHS handicapping provider.
4LEFT uses WHS-style methodology to help golfers track and understand their own scoring.
If you need an official Handicap Index for formal handicapping or competition purposes in England, you need an authorised route such as an affiliated golf club or England Golf's iGolf service.

Why isn't my handicap simply my average score?
Because the difficulty of the course and tees matters.
Shooting 90 from one set of tees is not necessarily the same performance as shooting 90 somewhere else.
Handicap calculations use information including:
- your adjusted score
- Course Rating
- Slope Rating
- your previous scoring record
That allows performances from different courses and tees to be compared more fairly.

What happens when I photograph another scorecard?
Once you have entered your first three cards, each additional round becomes part of your scoring history and 4LEFT recalculates your handicap.
A new round may:
- improve your handicap
- leave it almost unchanged
- cause it to rise
- not currently influence the calculation
That is why 4LEFT keeps the rounds behind the handicap rather than just displaying one number.
What does 4LEFT show me beyond my handicap?
Your handicap tells you roughly where your scoring level sits.
Your scorecards tell you much more.
As your history builds, 4LEFT can help show:
- which rounds are affecting your handicap
- putts
- greens in regulation
- fairways hit or missed
- where shots are being lost
- doubles or worse
- recurring problem holes
- performance on different courses
- scoring patterns over time
The objective is not simply to produce another handicap number.
It is to help you understand why you scored what you scored.
Can I photograph old scorecards?
Yes.
If you still have previous scorecards, you can use them to build your 4LEFT scoring history.
You do not have to wait until you play three new rounds.
Photograph three suitable cards you already have, select your scores if other players are shown, check the extracted scores and save them.
Do I need to use my phone while I am playing?
No.
That is one of the main reasons 4LEFT is built around the scorecard.
Play golf normally.
Mark your card.
Finish the round.
Then take a photograph.
4LEFT is primarily a post-round golf scoring and analysis product, so your phone does not need to become part of every shot.
What if 4LEFT reads a score incorrectly?
You check the scorecard before the round is saved.
The photograph is there to remove data entry, not to take control away from you.
If anything has been read incorrectly, correct it before confirming the card.
The saved round should always reflect the golf you actually played.
