Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use 4LEFT, how we use it, who we may share it with, and the rights you have over your information.
4LEFT is operated by Dean Laval trading as 4LEFT (“4LEFT”, “we”, “us” or “our”). We are responsible for the personal information processed through the 4LEFT website and services.

1. Information we collect
Account information
When you create or use a 4LEFT account, we may collect:
- your email address;
- your name or display name;
- your account and sign-in information;
- information you choose to add to your golfer profile.
Golf and round information
When you record golf activity, we may store information including:
- courses and tees played;
- round dates;
- hole-by-hole scores;
- putts;
- fairway results;
- handicap-related information;
- round totals and scoring statistics;
- performance history;
- Personal Stroke Index and other derived statistics;
- 4LEFT Handicap calculations;
- round analysis and other information generated from your playing history.
This information is used to provide your scoring history, handicap calculations, statistics and analysis.
Scorecard photographs
If you choose to use the scorecard photo feature, the photograph you submit is processed so that 4LEFT can attempt to identify scores, putt and fairway codes and printed course information automatically.
The image and processing instructions are sent to an AI service provider, currently Google's Gemini API, for processing. Your name and email address are not included in that request.
4LEFT does not save the photograph. It is sent for reading and is not kept in our database or file storage. Only the information you check and confirm is saved as part of your round.
You can avoid using AI scorecard processing by entering your round manually.
Google processes and may retain the content it receives in accordance with the Gemini API terms that apply to our use of the service.
AI-generated analysis
When you save a round in 4LEFT, we may automatically generate a short written summary of that round using an AI service, currently Google's Gemini API.
To do this, we send a summary of that round rather than your whole account. It includes the course and tee, the date played, your playing handicap, hole-by-hole scores, putts and fairway results, statistics calculated for the round, Personal SI and comparisons with your own earlier rounds. Your name and email address are not included.
The generated summary and the round information it was written from are stored with that round.
AI-generated analysis is provided as an interpretation of your golf data and may occasionally be incomplete or incorrect.
4LEFT does not use AI to make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Course information
If you add, correct or report course information, we may store:
- course and tee information you submit;
- corrections you propose;
- information required to review the change;
- a record associating the submission with your account for moderation and security.
Course information forms part of a shared catalogue. If your account is later deleted, we may retain useful course information after removing its association with you.
Historic 4LEFT information
4LEFT contains records from the earlier 4LEFT service.
These may include historic golfer profiles, rounds, scores, courses and handicap information originally provided to 4LEFT.
Where possible, historic information may be linked to a current account when there is a single, unambiguous match to a verified email address.
We do not link a historic profile to a current account where the match is uncertain.
Historic records can exist without being linked to any current account. They are not publicly visible, although historic society membership and results can be seen by signed-in members of the same society. If you used the earlier 4LEFT service, you can contact us about your historic information whether or not you have a current account.
Technical information
When you use 4LEFT, our systems and hosting providers may process technical information such as:
- IP address;
- browser and device information;
- operating system;
- dates and times of requests;
- authentication and security events;
- error and diagnostic information.
We use this information to operate, secure, troubleshoot and improve the service.
2. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- create and operate your account;
- store your rounds and playing history;
- calculate your 4LEFT Handicap and golf statistics;
- provide Personal SI and other performance analysis;
- process scorecard photographs;
- generate AI-written round summaries;
- maintain and improve course information;
- restore eligible historic 4LEFT information;
- answer support requests;
- protect 4LEFT against misuse, fraud and unauthorised access;
- diagnose faults and improve the service;
- meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not provide your personal information to advertisers for behavioural advertising.
3. Our lawful bases
Under UK data protection law, we process personal information using one or more of the following lawful bases.
- Contract — where processing is necessary to provide the 4LEFT service you have requested.
- Legitimate interests — where necessary to operate, secure, maintain and improve 4LEFT, provided those interests do not override your rights and freedoms.
- Consent — where we ask you to make an optional choice, such as certain communications or features requiring consent. You may withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — where we are required to process or retain information by law.
4. Service providers
We use specialist service providers to operate 4LEFT.
These currently include:
- Supabase — database, authentication and related infrastructure.
- Vercel — website and application hosting and delivery.
- Google (Gemini API) — AI processing used to read scorecard photographs and to write round summaries.
We may also use service providers for activities such as email delivery, security, diagnostics and infrastructure.
We provide service providers only with information reasonably required to perform their function and require personal data to be handled appropriately.
Some providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where this occurs, we rely on an appropriate legal mechanism for the international transfer of personal data.
Third-party golf course data services may also be used to supplement course information. We do not intentionally provide those services with your 4LEFT account or playing history unless this is required for a feature and disclosed to you.
5. Cookies and local storage
4LEFT currently uses only cookies that are strictly necessary for the service to work, for:
- signing you in;
- keeping your session secure.
We do not currently use analytics, advertising or other tracking cookies.
If we introduce non-essential analytics or tracking technologies requiring consent, we will update this notice and request consent where required before using them.
6. How long we keep information
We normally retain your account and golf history for as long as your 4LEFT account remains active.
Scorecard photographs are not stored by 4LEFT. AI-written round summaries are kept with the round they describe and are removed if that round is deleted.
If you ask us to delete your account, we aim to delete or de-identify associated personal information within 30 days, except where:
- information must be retained to comply with a legal obligation;
- limited information is required for security, fraud prevention or dispute resolution;
- information remains temporarily within normal backup cycles;
- shared course information can reasonably be retained after removing its association with you;
- anonymised or aggregated information no longer identifies you.
Technical and security logs are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for security, support and operational purposes.
7. Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- obtain a copy of your personal information;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- ask us to delete personal information;
- ask us to restrict certain processing;
- object to processing based on legitimate interests;
- receive certain information in a portable format;
- withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office if you believe your personal information has been handled incorrectly.
8. Account deletion
You may request deletion of your 4LEFT account by emailing support@4left.com from the email address associated with your account.
Please use Account Deletion Request as the subject.
Account deletion is not automatic. We handle each request manually after checking that it came from the email address associated with the account.
Deleting an account may permanently remove your profile, rounds, statistics, handicap history and personalised analysis. Once deletion has been completed, this information may not be recoverable.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect your information, including encrypted network connections, authentication controls and restricted access to administrative systems.
No internet service can guarantee absolute security. If you believe your 4LEFT account or information may have been compromised, contact support@4left.com.
10. Children
4LEFT is not intended for children under 13.
If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without an appropriate lawful basis, we will take reasonable steps to remove it.
11. Other websites
4LEFT may link to websites and services operated by other organisations.
Their handling of personal information is governed by their own privacy policies and is outside our control.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as 4LEFT develops or where legal or technical requirements change.
The current version and its date will always be published on the 4LEFT website.
If we make a material change affecting how we use existing personal information, we will take reasonable steps to bring that change to your attention before the new use begins.
